There were two main periods of coinage in the Roman Republican era:
- The “Aes Grave” period (290 BC to 211 BC), which mainly consisted of cast bronze coinage
- The “Denarius” period (211 BC – 82 BC). Silver coins were introduced (the main one being the Denarius) and the Aes Grave coins decreased dramatically in weight and size which meant they could be struck rather than cast. From around 84 BC onwards Bronze coinage disappeared (for now) due to inflation.
In parallel to these were coins minted in the Greek style for trade with Greece.
